Study Revealing Food Additives Increase Risk of Diabetes Supported by Doctors Health Press

Study Revealing Food Additives Increase Risk of Diabetes Supported by Doctors Health Press

Food Additives Increase Risk of Diabetes

Boston, MA (PRWEB) November 19, 2011

The Doctors Health Press, a publisher of various natural health newsletters books and reports, including the popular online Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin, supports a recent clinical study that found a common food additive, carrageenan, could lead to glucose intolerance and insulin resistance.

As reported in the Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin on Wednesday, November 16, 2011, (http://www.doctorshealthpress.com/food-and-nutrition-articles/this-common-food-additive-could-up-your-risk-for-diabetes) researchers at the University of Illinois in Chicago studied the impact of carrageenan on glucose tolerance, insulin sensitivity and insulin signaling in mice. They noted at the outset of the study that carrageenan is known to cause inflammation, which is associated with diabetes.

The mice were given carrageenan in their drinking water, and underwent a glucose tolerance test and an insulin tolerance test. The researchers found that glucose tolerance was significantly impaired in carrageenan-treated mice compared with untreated controls.

The researchers say this is the first report of the impact of carrageenan on glucose tolerance and shows that carrageenan impairs glucose tolerance, increases insulin resistance, and inhibits insulin signaling. They suggest that these effects may result from carrageenan-induced inflammation. They concluded by stating directly that carrageenan in the human diet may contribute to the development of diabetes.

Carrageenan is used as a thickening agent. It is processed from seaweed or algae. Carrageenan is often added to milk products. It also crops up in wines and beers, sliced meats, and even toothpaste.

The Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin is a daily e-letter providing natural health news with a focus on natural healing through foods, herbs and other breakthrough health alternative treatments. For more information on the Doctors Health Press, visit http://www.doctorshealthpress.com.

Victor Marchione, MD is the Chairman of the Doctors Health Press Editorial Board. He is also the editor of The Food Doctor and has released a new video revealing 12 fighting foods to help virtually all of your current health problems. All Natural Protein Powder Now Available From Florida Nutrition Company Is Safe For Vegetarians

All Natural Protein Powder Now Available From Florida Nutrition Company Is Safe For Vegetarians

Protein Power Mix Daytime and Night Formula

(PRWEB) November 18, 2011

An all natural protein supplement is now available from natural nutrition company, True Healthy Products. The Florida based company deals with nutritional supplements and other products to support a healthier lifestyle using all natural ingredients.

A free guide on the Protein Power Mix Nighttime formula and its breakdown of ingredients can be viewed at:

http://www.truehealthyproducts.com/products/sports-nutrition/protein-power-mix/night-formula

The protein powder supplement called “Protein Power Mix” consists of two different formulas, one for day time use, and one for slow absorbing night time use or for use after an athletic workout to boost muscle recovery. The night time formula includes a plant-based stem cell recruiting agent. Within the ingredients the formulator has listed, “eggplant extract” as the stem cell recruiter.

On the company’s website http://www.truehealthyproducts.com, True Healthy Products cites Dr. Rob Shore’s study which has shown eggplant extract to be a positive influence in muscle rejuvenation because it contains stem cell recruiting activity. Dr. Shore’s study states that Eggplant contains an alkaloid which apparently acts on the acetylcholine receptors thereby enabling stem cell recruitment.

According to the formulator of the Protein Power Mix, Andrew Wood, “When you workout, you damage muscle tissue. This damaged tissue sends out chemical messages which catch the attention of new stem cells. These stem cells flow to the injured area and begin healing it by forming new muscle fibers. When a stem cell recruiter is implemented into a fitness regimen, muscle repair is enhanced which constitutes greater muscle growth, reduced soreness, and improved recovery. Combine the acetylcholine agonist activity (stem cell recruitment) along with other crucial nutrients the muscle needs to recover and grow, and you have a very powerful protein mix. Hence, Protein Power Mix.”

WeBlogFood.com Launches Free Parent Community to Help Parents Prove to their Kids that Broccoli isn’t the Ultimate Evil

WeBlogFood.com Launches Free Parent Community to Help Parents Prove to their Kids that Broccoli isn’t the Ultimate Evil

Silver Spring, MD (PRWEB) November 17, 2011

With feeding children a healthy diet often referred to as ‘the ultimate challenge’, one Dad has decided to tackle the issue head on – launching http://weblogfood.com – a community devoted to bringing together parents of even the most pickiest eaters.

Research is showing alarming statistics that pertain to the health of children. Almost 20% of the nation’s children are now classed as obese, the number having tripled in just twenty five years (Source: NHANES). This, coupled with his own struggle to feed his children well, prompted Mike Neimat to launch his own online community.

“Let me tell you – my children are the most well behaved and beautiful kids I could ever have asked for; but feeding them well is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do, and that says something!”, says Mike. He continues, “I literally had the idea to launch an online community devoted to kid’s food and nutrition while driving my car – a car ride that could definitely change my life as well as the lives’ of parents around the world!”

WeBlogFood.com is one of the only online communities with a sole dedication of bringing together parents who have an interest in childhood nutrition. Anyone is welcome to join – and the site places a special focus on parents of kids with food allergies, such as those connected with nuts, wheat and eggs. It’s packed with priceless features including user profiles, groups, forums and user-driven blogs. Those who join the site will also be able to create their own sub-domain, giving them their own little slice of tasty web history.

The site can be used for free – something that will be a saving grace to those trying to manage the high costs of modern parenting. However, there also a premium membership available that will remove advertisements from user’s blogs, and offer them some funky premium blog themes.

Mike reiterates that while his site provides light-hearted and casual communication, there’s a serious undertone to its existence:

“Any loving parent wants their children to be happy and healthy, and it simply does come down to food at the end of the day. My long-term goal to position WeBlogFood.com as an authority hub to help parents face the greatest challenge of their parenting career”, he says.

To join in the discussion, launch a blog and meet parents who could save a life (and stop hair from going grey!), please visit: http://www.weblogfood.com

Chicago Personal Trainer Tips On Surviving Christmas Parties Without Gaining Weight

Chicago Personal Trainer Tips On Surviving Christmas Parties Without Gaining Weight

Chicago Boot Camp

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) November 17, 2011

According to Craig Kastning, a Chicago based fitness trainer, December can be a terribly fattening time of year, with all the work Christmas parties, Christmas cookie baking, and family get-togethers. In fact, the average person gains a pound of pure, hard-to-lose fat during this month. Worse yet, people who are already overweight gain an average of 5 pounds over the holidays. Craig Kastning, Chicago Personal Trainer and owner of Chi-Town Boot Camps, offers a few tips for Chicagoans who are looking to survive holiday parties without gaining too much weight.

“During my one-on-one counseling sessions with people, we develop a step-by-step customized nutrition cheat sheet. I literally plan a step-by-step program for my clients. We don’t believe in fad diets, packaged meals or starvation. We like to eat too! Instead, we aim for something realistic and nutritious that people can stick to.” The Chicago gym adds that the key to avoiding weight gain over Christmas is not skipping all cookies and desserts altogether, but eating a smaller portion instead. Complete abstinence from sweets can lead to binging later.

Here are 10 other tips to avoid holiday weight gain from a certified personal trainer in Chicago:

1.    Eat a 100-200 calorie snack that combines a protein with a carb before attending parties. Good choices include apple slices with peanut butter, a cheese stick and baby carrots, or low-fat yogurt and a quarter cup of granola cereal.

2.    Choose that one high-calorie indulgence – be it a slice of pumpkin pie or a glass of egg nog – and fill plates with low-calorie vegetables and fruits the rest of the night. It’s best to select something seasonal that is a true treat, rather than mashed potatoes or something that can be eaten any time.

3.     Avoid licking the spoon while baking. This little indulgence costs people 300 calories a pop!

4.    Don’t use a morning run as an excuse for second helpings. Many people overestimate the amount of calories they burn during exercise and underestimate the amount of calories they eat.

5.    Focus on socializing as the heart of the party, rather than food. Talking with relatives away from the buffet table avoids overindulgent snacking. Many families take pre or post-dinner walks together to prevent lethargy and burn off excess calories.

6.    Drink one glass of water for every other beverage consumed to avoid drinking too many calories.

7.    Start off the meal by putting just one or two bites on the plate to decide where the calories are best spent.

8.    Avoid or limit sauces, which add (often) unnecessary calories to each dish.

9.    Slow down. Put forks down between bites. Chew slowly. Savor moments of conversation.

10.    Keep working out during the holidays. Any movement is good movement, but aim for rigorous interval training the day before a holiday party to burn more calories for the next 24-48 hours.

Chicago personal trainer Chris Kastning is offering a week of free boot camp sessions, along with a personalized nutrition and exercise program for just $ 1, as part of a special holiday promotion to help people prevent December weight gain.

About The Company: Chi Town Boot Camps is a chicago weight loss that is committed to helping people reach their ideal health and fitness goals. Presenter: Bruce N. Ames, Ph.D.; Professor Emeritus, University of California/Berkeley; Senior Scientist, Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute

Bruce N. Ames, Ph.D. is author of the Triage Theory, which submits that micronutrients (approximately 40 essential vitamins, minerals, fatty acids and amino acids) are substances essential to proper metabolic function and thus both short-term survival and long-term health. Triage theory predicts that the consequence of moderate shortages of even a single micronutrient, though insufficient to cause overt clinical symptoms, will impair functions essential for long-term health. This impairment will result in insidious damage (e.g. increased DNA damage) that, over time, leads to the acceleration of age-associated diseases (e.g. increased cancer). As people with modest deficiencies have no overt clinical symptoms, there has been little incentive to correct these deficiencies, though this could change if it can be shown that they are resulting in biochemical changes, e.g. chromosome breaks, that are markers of increased risk of age-related diseases, e.g. cancer. The considerable experimental and theoretical support for the triage idea will be discussed as will a strategy for determining the optimum level of each micronutrient in humans.

Saturday, December 10

Educational Track: Breakout Track 1

Title: The Toxic Triangle: Diabesity, Glycation, and Environmental Toxins

Presenter: Frederic Vagnini, M.D.; Medical Director, Heart, Diabetes & Weight Loss Centers of New York

Frederic Vagnini, M.D. presents The Toxic Triangle, a theory that offers preventative strategies to counter the array of health complications associated with degenerative disease. The first component of the Toxic Triangle, diabesity – the combination of obesity, diabetes and incident cardiovascular disease, poses a significant danger to individual patients and poses as an emerging public health issue. Glycation, the second component of the Toxic Triangle, involves cellar damage caused by glucose and other sugars as the result of Advanced Glycation End products (AGEs), and is linked to accelerated oxidative damage, inflammation, organ damage and progressive atherothrombosis. Exposure to environmental toxins, the third element of the Toxic Triangle, can lead to neurological dysfunction, enzyme and metabolic disorders, obesity, depressed immunity, endocrine dysfunction and cancer. Northwest Weight Loss Surgery Doctors of Weight Loss Experts are Enrolling WA Patients in Clinical Trial

Northwest Weight Loss Surgery

Everett, WA (PRWEB) November 16, 2011

Drs. Kevin Montgomery, Robert Michaelson, and Alana Chock, all Doctors of Weight Loss experts at Northwest Weight Loss Surgery, announced today that they are enrolling patients into a clinical trial for a new weight loss surgery procedure. This new procedure, the Laparoscopic Greater Curvature Plication, is also known as gastric plication, or just “plication”. Candidates include adults with obesity who have failed more conservative weight reduction alternatives such as diet, exercise and pharmacotherapy, and have a Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than 35.

Unlike the Gastric Bypass and Sleeve Gastrectomy, the Laparoscopic Greater Curvature Plication surgery does not involve removal of gastric tissue or permanent surgical alteration of the bowel. During plication surgery, the surgeon frees up the greater curve of the stomach (the round part) and folds the stomach inward. Two rows of folds are created using sutures to significantly reduce the volume of the stomach, restricting how much a person can eat at one sitting. The stomach is not removed, no adjustments are needed, and no devices are implanted into your body. Although the procedure is investigational, early tests are showing positive results. Dr. Robert Michaelson said, “We’re excited with the preliminary results. We are seeing 70% excess weight loss in some of our first patients, and are looking forward to watching these patients’ progress and collecting longer term data.”

The need for surgical weight loss options continues to grow. “Obesity is a growing health epidemic in the United States”, Dr. Chock said, “and there is a need for additional effective treatments.” Obesity is a leading cause of preventable death in the United States, second only to smoking. It has a known correlation to life-threatening comorbid conditions such as heart disease, stroke, type two diabetes, sleep apnea and even premature death; obesity is a disease that requires treatment. “This is a promising investigational procedure” Dr. Chock added. “Weight loss surgery can be life changing and life saving. We’re always pleased to be able to add other options for our patients, and the plication has the potential to be a safe, effective alternative or addition to the Lap-Band.”

The surgeons at Northwest Weight Loss Surgery serve as experts with Doctors of Weight Loss, and contribute to educating the public and other healthcare professionals about obesity and bariatric surgery options.
