My Atkins Diet Story

aka how one Iowa guy lost over 200 pounds and gained his life back. I can not say enough about how positively the Atkins Diet and low carb in general has been for me. I went from a 429 pound guy who could barely make it up a flight steps to a guy running half marathons and rejoining the National Guard. My health is fantastic, and my blood work (cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, heart) could not be better.

Thank you. I am perfectly open to others seeking their dietary success with an alternative choice like vegetarian. There are lots of successful vegetarian. I am perhaps more cautious with vegans and those pursuing a zero carb lifetstyle as both require much more vigilance to be healthy.

If however someone can prove they are healthy with long term healthy living and athletic performance, who am I critique? I just simply want that allowance in return.

@bowulf My sister in law lost 3 stone(42lb) on Atkins.Obviously as a vegetarian,I disapproved of the amount of meat she was eating but I admire anyone who has the willpower to stick to a weight loss programme because I have none.

I guess… That is disheartening how much damage can arise by the philosophy of insulin management via pharmacy as opposed to actually treating the real problem – over-indulgence of carbs and insulin resistance.

Wow, great video Bowulf. I would like to think that a low carb way of eating is getting more accepted, but I don’t know. I was at the library last week looking at a great book by The Mayo Clinic. This book had great illustrations and pictures, very full of great information. Then I get to the dietary reccommendations for Type 2 diabetics. I just about fell out of my chair, Mayo reccommends that a type 2 diabetic EAT 45-65% OF THIER CALORIES FROM CARBOHYDRATES. Gee, some things never change.

You might remember that I’ve struggled with this sugar thing for some time. I’m feeling seriously led into adding Sugar Busters to my intermittent fasting lifestyle.

Some times we have to give up what we most love to readjust our mindset and relationship with it. We need the space and distance to establish control over what controlled our actions. It doesn’t have to mean a complete and forever break from past foods.

I however personally needed the break to once again assert who was in control and make logical decisions not ones ruled by addiction or destructive tendencies. It really can help, and you are already half way there with IF in controlling.

So inspirational!!! Loved the military uniform shots especially because I’m a military brat! Okay…believing I can do it, checked “yes”, exercise, checked “yes” and loving it may I add, giving up sugar????

I would look at anything sweetened with a sugar alcohol like Sorbitol or Malitol, which happen to be the worst. Those will absolutely give you gas and the runs. If you still need a sweets fix, look at some of the dessert recipes I have posted here. The low carb candy bar recipe is simple and easy.

i just threw a temper tantrum and tossed all my atkins brand “food” in the garbage because of my lack of sleep due to the runs. im training for golden gloves and ive already lost 20lbs in about 7weeks time. i dont know what im going to do about my sweet tooth but atkins brand will not re-enter my casa. i was also eating sugar free peppermint patties (supposedly fine)… they are also in the trash. tonight will be interesting.

That’s one of the reasons I’d suggest most people eat real foods as opposed to frankenfoods…

Oh to your first question, nearly 5 years after goal I am still going strong.

  20. bowulf says:

When I first started, I didn’t work out hardly at all. I rode a recumbent bike for a 10-20 minutes. I progressed to walking 15 minutes from there at 4 mph. That progressed to the elliptical trainer and biking on a cheap bike that I wouldn’t care if my then 350plus pounds broke it. I did many many miles on that bike.

When I was closer to goal and rejoining the National Guard was near, I started running 2-3 miles. I also did resistance training too. Since then, I started running marathons.

Congrats on deciding to be healthy and take your life back. Thank you for the very kind words!

How much exercise did you do?
I’ve been going to the gym twice a week doing intense workouts (1 hour each time).
I want to increase it to 4 times a week now. How much did you do?

  23. thicksnakes says:

bowulf you look amazing! have you kept the weight off? I’m on atkins for the third time and have lost a stone this week! I’d reccomend the diet to anyone cos the energy you get from it is incredible, but I find it hard to stick to. This time I’m going to go on a slimming world diet when I’ve lost four stone cos you’ve got the red days where you eat really low carb and that really seems to suit me. You’re video is an inspiration!

  24. bowulf says:

    You are too kind…

  25. natalie021983 says:

Yes it just makes my cravings worse. I start off thinking that I’ll just have a little, then it’s two or three bowls then I can hardly control the cravings. I’ll try to find some chromium picollinate.

By the way, you look really cute now. Especially in your uniform.
